Though the benefits of a pregnancy pillow while you are pregnant are quite obvious, there are many advantages to owning this type of support after your baby is born and if you look after your pillow in the right way, you will find that it not only looks and feels better during your pregnancy but will also continue to serve you and your family for years to come.

The design of the pregnancy pillow means that you can tailor the support you get during your pregnancy to your own needs. Whether you go a support wedge or a more flexible pillow, you can place these supports just where you need them to give you the benefit you need during pregnancy.

While some women need more support for their back during pregnancy, others will use their pillows for sleeping in a vertical position, to support their bump when they are led down or between their knees to keep your pelvis inline when you sleep, therefore relieving potential back ache the next day.

However the benefits of your pillow do not stop after your baby is born. Initially the pillow will support you as you recover from having your baby and will also be vital in ensuring that you are not straining too much while you are nursing your baby. Both a wedge and a pillow can provide you with support during nursing to ensure that don’t have to hunch over your baby too much, while the pillow design will also keep the baby at the right height you ensure that you have more flexibility and freedom to hold your baby in the correct way as you nurse. Wrap the ends of the pillow behind your back and you have support for your spine in just the right position to make you keep a more correct posture which is going to help you avoid back strain during those first few months.

As your baby moves on to bottles, a pillow is a great way to give them support while you are feeding, which is especially ideal if you are feeding multiples and cannot have them on your lap at the same time to feed.

When your baby wants to start sitting up, your pillow can mould into a protective cushion that is going to avoid potential bumps and bruises and as your children get bigger they will be so used to seeing the pillow around that it will become a comfort to them through sickness and tired days.

But all this use comes at a price, if you are going to be using such a pillow daily it is going to get grubby and worn very quickly. But worry not. Choose a pregnancy pillow with loose washable covers and you can ensure that your pillow is clean and ready whenever it is needed. Opt for 100% cotton covers and you have a hard wearing material that is going to stand up to almost anything a little baby can throw at it.

If you have a foam based pillow the surface can be gently washed with a light detergent or damp cloth to avoid potential dirt and any foam based pillow can be frozen to eradicate any potential germs harbouring inside the pillow.

If you are concerned about the age of your pillow, it is always possible to obtain replacement covers or even replace the foam inside at a specialised foam shop, or you can opt for a bean bag based pillow whose contents can be replaced or enhanced over the years.

When you buy a pregnancy pillow think of this as a parenting aid that is going to stay with you for years. Try to get the best quality and style that your budget will allow and make sure you take care of your pillow, who knows treat it right and it could be helping you well into your old age.

And while you are on the site, you can check out the full range of pregnancy pillows and nursing pillows which are ideal whether you are pregnant or have a new born baby.

We love the Perfectly Happy People Widgey Nursing Pillow which is a pregnancy pillow and nursing pillow combined.

When you are pregnant this soft flexible doughnut shaped pillow will support you whether you are led down or sat up. When you are in bed you can either put this pillow under your bump to keep you comfortable when you lay on your side or you can turn it around and sleep with the curve away from your bump if you prefer the support under your head or between you legs to keep your pelvis aligned and comfortable.

When you are sat up this pillow provides fantastic support to your back and is ideal for keeping the correct posture when you are sitting to avoid the back pain so often felt during pregnancy.

And when your baby is finally born this pillow will continue to help and support you through the years to come. Though this pillow is still ideal for providing you with the support and comfort you need after the baby is born, especially for the first few days, it is also a fantastic nursing pillow. Simply wrap the pillow around you and you can rest your baby’s weight on the pillow while you are feeding to keep him at the right height without straining your back. And by wrapping the ends of this pillow around your back when you are feeding you will also generate a curve in your back so that you sit more upright and keep a more appropriate posture so that you don’t develop hunched shoulders or backache during nursing.

And when your baby starts to sit up by herself, this is a great crash pad to ensure that your baby lands on something soft. By just curving this pillow around your baby when he is moving about, you can ensure you have a soft comfortable environment for any wobbles. This pillow will become such a part of yours and your childrens lives that in years to come you will find them snuggling up to this pillow to watch their favourite film or for some comfort when they are sick. And with the washable covers, you can make sure this pillow lasts just as long as your family need it.

To take advantage of this fantastic offer today at Boots, simply click on the Boots banner and you will be taken directly to the official Boots.com site to place your order and shop until your heart’s content. All orders have to be completed by midnight tonight to claim the extra Advantage points and remember you will need your Advantage Card to hand to check out.

This year January 21st has been nominated as the ‘most depressing day of the year’ as it is the day of all those dreaded post-Christmas credit card bills. But now we have reached January 28th and we have much more to celebrate. Not only is it the end of the working week but for most of the nation it is also the first pay day of the year, so we can all breathe a sigh of relief that we got through another Christmas of ‘family fun’ and start to look forward to the year ahead.

For most pregnancy pillows customers, 2011 is going to bring an extra special arrival in terms of a new baby which is a time to celebrate and look to the future. But in focussing on your new arrival, make sure that you take time out to care for yourself as well. After all this is going to be a big year for you too.

In preparation for the birth, make sure that you are fully rested and full of energy.

Though it is always difficult to get a solid nights sleep when you are pregnant, as we have stated before, there are different ways that you can ensure you get as much sleep as possible.

In addition, make sure that your body is prepared for birth. Make sure you eat a healthy diet that is full of the energy you will need for the labour itself and preparing the milk required for your baby shortly after.

It is usual that a woman is not allowed to eat during labour in a hospital as the contractions in the womb also contract the stomach and cause a mess on the hospital floor! So as you work up to your due date, eat slow release energy foods such as complex carbohydrates and protein, that will give you the energy you need when the time comes.

When you are packing your bag for hospital make sure you take with you high energy snacks that will stop you feeling hungry between meals and give the energy you need to care for your newborn baby. Seeds are a great source of slow release energy, so are bananas and pasta – and there is nothing wrong with asking your visitors to bring you a healthy meal rather than yet another bag of grapes if you don’t fancy the hospital food.

And don’t forget to take your pregnancy pillow with you when you go to the hospital. Not only will it be a great source of comfort for you when you are in labour, or before if a hospital stay is required, but it can also help you get comfortable after the birth and can be an immense help when breastfeeding.

The entire team here at Pregnancy Pillow wish you the very best for everything that 2011 brings and if you would like to drop us a line and tell us all about your events, please do so, and we will post the best ones on our site.

When our thoughts turn to what it is going to be like in the New Year with our new baby, we usually see ourselves walking through the park on a blustery winters day pushing our new born babies in their prams who are gurgling away happily. The sun is always out and for some reason the image always comes with a blue cross pram and a very slim version of you in a floor length wool coat that has never seen a speck of dirt in its entire life (or is that just me!).

When we have these visions, we are certainly not still in our maternity clothes and using our pregnancy pillow. But just like you will probably resign yourself to taking some time to wean yourself out of your bigger clothes, you should also stop and think before you resign your pregnancy pillow to the loft.

Although your body is going to change immediately when you give birth – after all the big lump in the middle won’t be there – the chemical and physical structure of your body takes a bit more time. The Relaxin and other hormones in your body that enable your skeleton to soften and prepare for labour will take at least several weeks to leave your body and for your frame to be fully supported again, which means that you should try and provide your body with the same care and support as you did when you are pregnant during this time.

Obviously there are going to be dramatic changes and a little baby is going to be taking up a lot of your time. But when you have a second to sit or lie down, make sure that you are comfortable and remember to use your pregnancy pillow to help support your back and your knees to ensure your pelvis is in a comfortable and natural position to avoid the aches and pains that can arise as your body starts to return to normal.

And also remember that most pregnancy pillows can also provide support to the baby. If you buy a good quality pregnancy pillow such as the Theraline V, you have a maternity pillow and nursing pillow in one. This pillow is designed so that you can position your baby for nursing without bearing the entire weight of the baby in your arms. This enables you to sit in a more correct position when nursing and to reduce the amount of strain on your back, both essential for reducing back ache and ensuring you don’t develop a slouch in you back which can effect you in later life. And as your baby gets bigger, the pillow then becomes a crash pad for learning to sit up and roll over.

A pregnancy pillow can in fact last you a life time. My family are still using the Theraline Pillow I bought with my first pregnancy 8 years ago and, thanks to the washable covers, it is still going strong and is used during every illness, headache and duvet day by the entire family.

So when you are looking to the future and what you will need when the baby arrives, remember your pregnancy pillow, it can become a life time friend.

Here at Pregnancy Pillow, we are always talking about the many benefits of using a pregnancy pillow and the life that the pillow has even after the birth of your child, and one of the key benefits after birth has to be the help that a pregnancy pillow or nursing pillow will give you in feeding your baby.

Whether you decide to breast feed or bottle feed, one of the first things you realise is that it is all about position. If you get your position right then you can happily feed one or two babies, by bottle or breast at the same time, happily and comfortably. And a pregnancy pillow will help you do this.

If you are breast feeding then pregnancy pillows and nursing pillows are designed to wrap around your body and make sure that your baby is at the correct height for feeding. As these pillows are so flexible, they can easily adjust to any size mum and can become a key element in ensuring that you can breast feed your baby comfortably.

Once you have wrapped the pillow around yourself you are able to lie the baby on the pillow and use your spare hand to prop the baby on the pillow, rather than having to bear the full weight of your baby while feeding. This means you have a far greater ability to adjust your baby’s head with your other hand and make sure that the baby latches on in a way that suits both mother and baby and keep that position for the whole time your baby is feeding.

Some babies will feed for quite a long time, especially when they are first getting used to breast feeding, and having the comfort of the nursing pillow means that the mother will not get tired so quickly and you always have a free hand to make sure that you can make the minor adjustments necessary to ensure breast feeding is a pleasure for you and your baby.

If you decide to bottle feed, then it is key that you ensure your baby is in a supported reclined position that ensures the milk flows through the teat but that the baby is not led down. By lying your baby on a nursing or pregnancy pillow, the baby will be at an ideal position for breast feeding and the person who is feeding can then look at the baby while they are feeding and bond with them.

A pregnancy pillow is also ideal for multiple pregnancies. If you are breast feeding then it is possible to feed both babies at the same time led on the pillow while you use your hands to manipulate their heads – believe me, I’ve done it! And if you decide to bottle feed your babies, then you can put them side by side so that they have contact with each other but face you so that you can bond with both of them and feed them at the same time.

And your pregnancy pillow can go anywhere with you. With washable covers and a flexible design, it is possible to put it in the car, under the pushchair or carry it by the handle, which many now have, to ensure that every feed, wherever you are can be just as effective as the last.

A pregnancy pillow can be such a useful thing that you will be surprised how long you will continue to use it, so it really is worth making sure you get a pillow that you know is going to last and that suits your growing needs, after all it may be with you a lot longer than you actually think.

When you are trying to get comfortable during your pregnancy, there is nothing worse than the aches and pains in your back; legs and bump that can really reduce your enjoyment of what should be a wonderful experience in your life.

The uncomfortable sensation can be anything from a dull ache or discomfort in your back to sharp shooting pains down your legs or across your bump.

This discomfort, usually known as Pelvic Girdle Pain, is caused by the chemical Relaxin which is produced by your body to encourage the ligaments and muscles around your pelvis to relax and widen to ease the progression of labour.

However, if this process starts earlier in pregnancy, the Relaxin can cause the muscles and ligaments around your pelvis to become slightly slack and may result in possible side to side movement in your pelvis. This very tiny movement may reduce the support to your spine leading to back ache and aches in your tummy muscles and legs but can also result in shooting pain down your legs or across your bump.

In its most extreme version, this pain can cause Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD) where the pelvis may lock and the individual becomes unable to move for varying degrees of time. This can be distressing, and in some cases, debilitating resulting in the need for crutches for support or complete bed rest.

However, there are lots of things you can do to alleviate and reduce the pain you experience in your pregnancy.

One of the most important things to do is to ensure that your pelvis gets the support it needs as much as possible.

The use of a good pregnancy pillow positioned between your legs will ensure that when you are lying down your pelvis is supported in the correct position, alleviating any stress on your spine and giving you time to relax in the correct position.

When you are walking about or sat in a chair, the use of a good maternity belt will also help. A maternity belt gives a slight lift to your bump, reducing the pressure on your pelvis and supporting your spine so that the movement is reduced and the pain is alleviated or stopped completely.

In addition there are plenty of ways to reduce the pain without resorting to pharmaceutical pain relief. Experiment to see whether warmth or cold is more effective with your pain. As a rule, warmth will ease muscle strain whilst cold can reduce inflammation and swelling. Try the Nexcare ColdHot Back & Abdomen Gel Pack Belt which can be heated in the microwave or cooled in the freezer as you need it.

Gentle non-weight bearing exercise can also help. Swimming is fabulous in pregnancy for providing exercise without causing stress to your joints or try a low impact pregnancy yoga class – it can work wonders and make you feel great.

Whatever pain you feel in your pregnancy, ensure that if it goes on for too long or you feel symptoms are getting worse that you consult a doctor. Though the vast majority of symptoms can be relieved by a good pregnancy pillow and the support of a maternity belt, always get checked out, and enjoy your pregnancy, you will never have this pregnancy again.
